Hand-Selected A Grade American Ginseng American Ginseng: A Rich Herbal Tradition Spanning 200 Years The term "ginseng" refers to eleven different varieties of a short, slow-growing plant with fleshy roots. American Ginseng has a rich herbal tradition dating back over 200 years and is one of the most popular nutrition supplements and herbal remedies.
The American Ginseng Growing Process Planting Ginseng Seeds American ginseng seeds are planted in soil that is free of rocks and weeds. Once the seeds are planted, they need to be protected from sunlight exposure and various weather extremes, as ginseng can only grow properly in cold weather with minimal sunlight.
Ginseng Cultivation During the summer months, various techniques are developed to provide shade for the ginseng plants. Cultivating ginseng requires a significant investment of time, care, planning, and sometimes luck.
Cooling and Drying After harvesting, the raw ginseng roots are placed in a refrigerated storage area for 2-3 weeks. This allows some moisture in the root to evaporate, drying the root to a golden color. Following the cooling period, the ginseng roots undergo a special washing and drying process to remove any residual moisture and harden the root. The unsorted ginseng then passes through an assembly line of experts for proper examination and grading before being placed into barrels for storage and shipment.
American Ginseng Cooking Methods Ginseng Tea: Add about 8-12 slices of ginseng root and any other desired ingredients to a cup. Pour hot water over the ginseng and steep for 8-10 minutes. You may allow the ginseng slice to steep for longer if you want a bolder flavor. Add additional hot water as needed, and you can make a total of two to three cups of ginseng tea. The ginseng root will become soft and may be eaten if desired.
Ginseng Soup: Add ginseng, along with other herbal ingredients and meat such as chicken or pork, to a pot. Bring the mixture to a boil, then simmer for 3 hours.
